A good 37 inch TV

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

I’ve had this TV for about a month. I have two other Toshiba’s, a 22 inch and a 26 inch, the sound isn’t very good on those sets. They are in the bedroom, which is okay. I bought this TV for the living room, which has a very good sound. Buying from Amazon.com is the best, great price and very good customer service. Thanks, Amazon.

Toshiba Trilled

We replaced our digital tuner / non-HD Polaroid 15″ television in our kitchen, with this HDTV/DVD combo unit. We are VERY pleased with the purchase and feel the value for the $$’s was well worth the upgrade! The TV fits perfectly on a small lazy susan situated on a counter top under a set of our kitchen cabinets. The lower profile, due to it’s wide-screen design, allows a better fit in this application versus the replaced Polaroid. Of the other units we researched, this one came highly rated for it’s sound quality versus similar sized TV’s. After watching it for a couple of months, we see why. The sound quality is equal to our larger 36″ and 42″ HDTVs. The reaction time to receive a picture when first turning on the unit, is a little slow, but not unlike other HDTV’s we have. The remote control features are well designed and easy to access at quick glance. The integrated DVD player is very asthetically pleasing and desingned in a way that it fits into the TV cabinet without looking like an ‘add on’. The picture quality is super and agian rivals those of our larger HDTV’s. We are extremely pleased with this TV in it’s particular application and would highly recommend it to anyone considering the purchase of a screen size <20".

Excellent TV, Awesome picture

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

I didn’t buy the TV thru Amazon but I wanted to write a review anyway. This is an awesome TV. The picture is excellent and clear. I haven’t learned all the features yet but I’m sure the TV will get better as I learn them. I watched football on it over the weekend and I could not believe how clear the picture was. I had a Samsung LCD 46 inch and thought that was great, but this Sony LED beats that by a mile. Don’t believe the bad reviews. This is an electronic devise and like all electronic devises their are defective one’s out there. You just replace it under warranty.

Shame on you Sony!! but you made good eventually!!

Update: I contacted Sony’s tech support service and they shipped out a new unit to me with no resistance. I received the new unit within 2 days and the replacement television works perfect so far. Sony sent out a prepaid return FedEx label for me to use so it will be no cost to me. Thank you Sony for making good on a defective unit!!!!!

Also I noticed that this tv has a hard plastic covering over the screen that does introduce some glare from lights in the background (a problem with the Plasma TV’s) I guess this hard plastic is to protect the delicate LCD screen as they were vulnerable to scratching and puncture.

SHAME ON YOU SONY!!!
I too noticed my new Sony making snap, crackle, and popping sounds while warming up. It also gets worse and pops more often the longer the TV is left on. I believe the sounds are from the plastic expanding and contracting due to the tv heating up. It wouldn’t bother me so much if it just popped a bit while warming up but the problem gets worse after about 2 hours or so and continues indefinitely.

My sound also drops out for a second or two every 15 minutes or so. This happens on the TV speakers and external speakers if hooked up. This TV is a real let down. I bought mine at a popular discount store just a week ago and yesterday I noticed they discontinued it already. Maybe they were sick of all the returns? Something is going on here since they dropped this line within a few short weeks of offering it. They only offer a 40 inch LED/LCD 120Hz Samsung comparable model. I will call the store’s customer support and try to work out an exchange or refund. Sony let me down on this one. I should have bought the Samsung.

On the plus side, the screen resolution, inputs, remote, and everything else is top notch.

From the moment I opened the box, it was obvious I had made the right choice. This TV oozes quality in every single way.

The display is wonderful. It’s not a matte display, but it has a relatively low reflection, not obnoxiously glossy like recent Apple products. The picture looks gorgeous, even off angle, and the unit and base have a high gloss black finish.

The features are well covered in the specs above (Netflix HD streaming capability, YouTube, a built in TV Guide using online data, DLNA support to play media off your PC over the network, 3D)

Looking for downsides, the use of the large 300×300 VESA mount is unfortunate, the display is lightweight and really doesn’t need such a large mount. The built-in stand uses a separate mount that is much smaller, and you could make your own plate or L bracket for the display to slide onto.

The TV menus are in the style of a PS3 (XMB), but some of the animations are unacceptably slow. Perhaps this can be improved in a later firmware upgrade. Also, not all menu options are available until about 30 seconds after you turn on the display.

My display says it is “Made in Mexico”.

Audio:
The built-in audio is acceptable, but I suspect most will want to use external audio with this display. There’s a non-obvious setting to turn on “S-Force Front Surround” mode for the internal speakers which improves the perception of sound, and by default it doesn’t try to reproduce low frequency bass.

Settings:
The display works well out of the box, but if you’re feeling adventurous, there are many settings for both the display and audio (scene select, four motionflow settings, mpeg noise reduction, dynamic LED, low light recovery and bright light reduction, steady sound, audio clarity settings to emphasize the human voice)

3D:
At the moment I am not impressed after using the 3D mode. Technically it works as expected with Blu-Ray or a PC with NVIDIA 3DTV Play, but the display is so bright and gorgeous on its own that I prefer 3D off. Note that you must buy an optional Sony 3D sync transmitter and Sony 3D active shutter glasses to use the 3D mode.

Don’t forget to buy an HDMI cable or two!

Great value, excellent quality

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

We purchased this TV from our local Target before Christmas (at the sale price) after finding it on-line, and reading reviews of different models. The set up was fairly easy after going to the Sony website. The instructions with the set and the instructions with the Cable TV box are confusing, but Sony has an interactive website where you can choose the components you have and get precisely the hook-ups you need to make. We found the picture quality is excellent with the default settings and have made no adjustments; sound quality is also very good. We chose this model because it fits our needs – didn’t need bells and whistles of the more expensive models. However, there are plenty of inputs if you want to hook up games, a pc, or other components. We have found no problem with picture or viewing quality at 60hz. We are very pleased with this purchase.

This is a Great Bedroom TV

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

I have had this tv for about a week now and I must comment on how amazing it is. The setup was a breaze I have had NO problems with the connected apps. Netflix looks better on this tv then using the PS3 or the Wii. The bluray player loads fast and the and sound is great for just TV speakers. One feature I didn’t think I would like is the Ambent light sensor. When it dimms the brightness of the tv when you turn the lights off it realy makes it easy to fall a sleep. The last thing I would like to talk about is the Xbar menu it work very well and it is user friendly to navagate. All in all I would recomend this tv to anyone.

This has been a really nice combo TV.
Love not having to have additional equipment to watch a movie and the wireless connection to the internet for Netflix works great.

Beautiful… Just beautiful!,

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

I upgraded from a Sony Wega 27″ flat screen (not flat panel). That thing was a beast; it must have weight over 100 lbs. It was pretty good (hey, it’s a Sony), but my new 40″ Bravia is unbelievable. I love it! Quck and easy to set up, intuitive menus, great options for inputs, and I can even use it as a computer monitor (I hooked up my lap top and views some pictures). I can’t say anything bad about it – I even got an amazing deal through a seller on Amazon.

The technology is good

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

I ordered this TV mainly for its internet video capability (Netflix etc) since we were tired of paying TimeWarner (Durham, NC) excessive fees. We canceled basic cable and only kept the RoadRunner service (we upgraded to the next tier of speed to help with Netflix streaming – so far (2 weeks) no problems, but it’s not clear whether the upgrade was absolutely necessary. The TV arrived just fine and on time and we hooked it up according to the instructions. The first thing we noticed was that the internet capability did not work. After playing around with the firmware updating settings and setting the update to “update now” – nothing happened – it just seemed to hang, we finally tried contacting Sony. First we tried the “live chat”, after about 20 minutes, someone came online. I guess this person (Cliff) was either helping other customers at the same time, was really slow, or was chatting or doing something else because the rate at which this was going, it was far from “live” (think several minutes between responses). At first, he told me that my tv did not support internet connections which was false. After I pointed this out to him, he said, “oh you’re right, your tv does support internet connections”…and left it at that. I pointed out that it did not seem to be updating even after we left the tv in standby mode for more than 36 hours (24 hours is mentioned in the manual). The internet configuration on the TV’s diagnostics showed that all connections were good (I even verified the connection with my computer). After explaining and reexplaining the problem, I decided to call SONY tech support. The person who took my call seemed more informed and told me to check my firm ware version number. It was apparently out of date but below version 4.06 (or something) he told me that the firmware could not automatically update itself over the network (I thought it was strange for an internet enabled tv), but went with this advice. He told me that they would immediately ship out a USB thumb drive with the latest update and that it would arrive within 7-10 business days! I inquired if they would be able to ship it overnight or at least 2 day, but he just told me that this was standard. Well, this was completley ridiculous since there was a 30 day warranty (not business days!) and by the time the update got to me, we would have little to no time to evaluate the tv. I inquired if I could download the update myself and install it and he told me where to find the update. I downloaded it, and put it on 4 different USB drives (3 of which are on a SONY compatibility list) formatted to the correct specs, and the TV would NOT recognize any of them. I thought, ok, maybe it’s sensitive to the full capacity of the drives, so I went and got a SONY brand USB drive that was also on the compatibility list (googled it) – still didn’t recognize it. Finally called SONY again and they told me that apparently, each tv has it’s own compatibility list – WTF!?. Finally got fed up and demanded that they ship the update overnight. Well, it was Saturday and to do that, they have to escalate the request to a higher level and those guys only worked regular banking hours – they took down my information and promised to call on Monday. Well, as you guessed, Monday came and went, and no call. We called on Tuesday and put in the formal request and the update arrived the next day. We went to put in the USB drive to do the update and *nothing happened*. When we checked the TV firmware version, it had apparently updated itself over the network during all this time we spent with customer service.
After that, the TV works fine. The only complaint I have is that since we don’t have basic cable, when we turn on the TV, it apparently looks for the antenna signal. Finding nothing, you get 1-2 minutes of snow and white noise while it turns on its other functions (network stuff). Calling SONY again, they told us that we should get basic cable to avoid this problem.
